Grooming Academy- Course Descriptions

Registered and Bonded through the Idaho Board of Education

Level I

This course consists of 260 hours of one-on-one training, and is designed for Vet Techs wanting to increase their skillset into grooming (2 months @ 3 days a week). This course is perfect for someone that has worked with dog triggers, and is familiar with the behaviors in general of cats and dog populations. This course teaches the basics of pet grooming for the purpose of becoming an employee in the pet grooming business (not be self-employed). This course focuses on bathing, anal gland expression, nail clipping, ear hair extraction, and basic kennel and lamb cuts. One year of professional dog handling is required prior to enrollment.

Level II

This course consists of 360 hours of one-on-one training. Three to seven months to complete (3 months @ 3 days a week). This course is designed for fast learners that do not plan to work for another. Students with a current or prior history of learning, physical, social, or emotional impairments are referred to Course III. This course teaches all breed dog (cats optional) breed clips, dog triggers and safety, bathing, and handling. Additionally, communication and problem-solving with owners is addressed (the hardest part of dog grooming). This course offers the option to ‘test out’ of each breed groom (requiring accelerated learning skills). Students testing out early are required to pass the all tests with a score of 85 or higher out of 100. Course II is a comfortable fit for individuals that learn easily and quickly, have high communication skills, and that do not exhibit past or current physical, learning, social or emotional disabilities.

Level III

This course consists of 600 hours and is designed for students that need a slower learning pace, OR that intend to be a business owner after graduation. Hours are individualized to meet the needs and goals of each student - allowing more time for reduced pressure to acquire grooming skills, or more time to learn business ownership skills. This course is customized for for business ownership OR for a more relaxed and flexible learning pace, depending on student attributes and goals. For future business owners, managing challenging owner expectations and managing challenging dog behaviors is emphasized for the survival and prosperity of your future business. This course teaches all breed dog grooming, (cats are optional), dental care and teeth scaling (optional), recognizing and managing common medical issues seen in the grooming room, recognizing and managing owner requests, concerns, expectations, and problem-solving, scheduling, and the importance of kennel and shop sanitation. Students that wish to open their own business are encouraged to bring their future shop measurements, and dimensions, budgets and business courses taken. They also should bring the average prices for grooming small (mini poodles), medium (cockers), large (collies) and extra-large dogs (New Foundlands) for the area where they will be opening. This course takes 6 -12 months to complete (6 months at 3 days a week).
